On battle flags and bumper stickers

Caught this in my feed aggregator today:

Confederate flag license plate battle reaches U.S. Supreme Court

I really have to wonder why this is such an important issue. For starters, I thought license plates were issued by the government as a way to quickly identify vehicles on the road? This government issue and use, even though vehicle owners are required to purchase them, still makes them government items. I thought personalizing was something that was done with paint jobs, bizarre suspension setups, music selection and bumper stickers. A driver’s license is also issued by the government, yet paid for by the driver … does this mean American drivers might someday look forward to personal logos on their driver’s licenses? Oh, won’t that be fun!
